Work backwards from the journey home

The easiest part of a concert trip to imagine is the show. The part that goes wrong is the hour after it. Stadium encores routinely finish close to the point where last trains leave, and 60,000 people reach the station at once.

So plan in reverse: find the realistic last service, decide whether you are willing to leave before the encore to catch it, and if you are not, book somewhere to stay or arrange a different route out. Making that decision in advance is much cheaper than making it on the night.

The stops that need more planning than the rest

Slane Castle has no railway station. Official event coaches from Dublin are the standard approach, local roads close on show days, and it is a field in a river valley — footwear and weather are part of the plan. Knebworth is served by Stevenage and Knebworth stations with event shuttles, and the return crush is the thing to prepare for. The Boston dates are at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, around 22 miles from the city, with MBTA special event trains from South Station and car parks that clear slowly.

Rome has no metro stop at the Stadio Olimpico, so allow more time than a map suggests. Paris depends on the RER, which is worth rehearsing before the night. By contrast, Amsterdam is one of the easier arrivals on the tour: Bijlmer ArenA station sits beside the ground, with direct trains from Centraal and Schiphol. Book accommodation against the venue, not the city

Stadium-night accommodation near a venue sells out early and reprices hard. Somewhere slightly further out on a direct line home often beats somewhere nominally closer that requires a change at midnight. For Foxborough and Slane in particular, book against where the venue actually is rather than the city named on the listing.

Prepare your phone for the whole evening

Mobile tickets, mobile maps and mobile payment all run on one battery in a place where the network is congested. Download or screenshot what you can before you arrive, carry a power bank, and make sure more than one person in the group can produce the tickets.

Agree a meeting point that works when the network does not — a named physical landmark outside the venue, plus a time. “Text me when you get out” fails reliably at 60,000 people.
